So I can have the top story in a section in one mod, and story 2 - 5 of the same section in another one? and so on?

Yes.
But it's easier to do that with 1 module. Set 5 items to display, 1 - TOP Item, 2-5 "ordinary" items. You can display these items from one section/category, or from several sections/categories, or even just those that you want (by ID).
