We want to use multiple instances of the RAXO module installed on a page, each selecting articles in its own category and each having its own default image. It would look similar to the Latest News section of modiinfo.com.
Is there a RAXO module layout that will do this for us?

Yes, this can be done with the RAXO module.
To use your own default images, just put them in the folder: modules/mod_raxo_module_name/tools/
Then your images will appear in the selectable list of default images.
For each copy of the module select the category you need and in the module advanced settings select your new default image from the list.
