Sure you can change built-in templates style. Actually, they were created to be universal and easily-adjusted. For this purpose they have well-commented code so that one could easily understand it and add changes.

We recommend first make a copy of a module template, and then add changes to the copy, not to the original file. This lets you preserve your adjustments when the module is updated.
